For better offroad performance, I replaced the F250 original-equipment ring and pinion gears with high-performance components specially designed to stand up to heavy offroad use and to provide greater puffing power.
The truck originally had a 3.54 gear ratio, but I opted for a 4.10 gear ratio. Most times, the gear ratio is changed to compensate for larger offroad tires. My tires really weren’t that much larger than stock, but I wanted a lot more low-speed pulling power. The new gear sets gave the truck approximately 16 percent improvement in torque output.
After installation, the gear shop emphasized the need for the offroad outdoorsman to practice preventive maintenance. “Most original equipment manufacturers tell you that you don’t really have to do much in the way of maintenance,” I was told. “And under normal operating conditions, that’s probably true—at least up to 40,000 to 50,000 miles.”
But hunters and fishermen don’t subject their trucks to “normal” usage.
Say you’re backing a vehicle down a ramp to pull a boat out of the water and you back down just far enough to put the rear axle vent tube slightly under water.What happens next creates havoc with the gears.The water cools the warm axle assembly, creating a partial vacuum that sucks water through the vent, where it mixes with the oil.
When that happens, the oil no longer can furnish sufficient lubrication to provide a boundary layer between the pinion and ring gear. As a result, the ring and pinion set are wiped out.You’il lose the bearings, too, because fragments from the deteriorating gear set contaminate the oil and score the bearings.
Bad news all the way around, If you do submerge the axle at a boat ramp, creek crossing, or mudhole, do the following: Remove the differential cover plate as soon as you get a chance and take a close look at the fluid. If the fluid has a milky appearance, it’s been contaminated by water and must be changed as quickly as possible. Generally, running the truck 20 to 30 miles isn’t so bad; but if you put on more than a couple of hundred miles, you’ll damage the gear set as well as the bearings. (If the foregoing is too much bother, stop at a qualified service station and have the mechanic do it for you.)
When you replace the gear oil, use a top-quality product. Going cheap here costs you money in the long run. That’s because gear oil not only lubricates and cools working gears, but it is also expected to protect exposed gear teeth and selector fork mechanisms from rust and protect shaft seals and other rubber parts from cracking.
